Interior Painting: How It Works, What We Paint and How to Prepare

Alt text

Fresh paint is the fastest way to change how a room feels. It is also a job that looks easier than it is. Doing it yourself means moving furniture, taping every edge and living around ladders and drop sheets for days. And when the prep is rushed, it shows: drips, wavy lines along the ceiling and old patches that still show through.

This guide explains how our painting service works, what we paint, why prep matters so much, and how to get your home ready.

What our painting service is, and what it isn't

We paint the inside of your home, from a single accent wall to every room. The service covers the whole job: protecting the room, preparing the surfaces, priming, painting and cleaning up.

We focus on interior painting. We don't take on exterior house painting or spray finishing for kitchen cabinets, which need different equipment and conditions.

How the service works

  1. You call us. Tell us which rooms and surfaces you want painted and roughly how big they are.
  2. We give you an estimate. You'll know roughly how long the job will take and what it will cost before you book.
  3. We protect the room. Furniture is moved away from the walls and covered, and floors are protected with drop sheets.
  4. We prepare the surfaces. We fill holes and cracks, sand, and tape the edges.
  5. We prime and paint. Primer goes on where it's needed, followed by two coats for full, even coverage.
  6. We clean up. Tape comes off, furniture goes back and we take the mess with us.

What we paint

Walls. Single rooms, accent walls, hallways, stairwells and whole-home repaints.

Ceilings. Including stained or yellowed ceilings that need a stain-blocking primer.

Trim. Baseboards, door and window casings and crown moulding.

Doors. Interior doors and door frames.

Touch-ups. Patch painting after repairs, and marks and scuffs in high-traffic areas.

Move-in and move-out repaints. A clean, neutral finish before a sale, a rental or a new start.

Why prep is most of the job

Paint doesn't hide flaws. It highlights them. Good prep is what separates a finish that looks professional from one that looks rushed.

  • Filling and sanding. Nail holes, dents and cracks are filled and sanded flush so they disappear under the paint.
  • Cleaning. Grease and dust stop paint from sticking, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Priming. New drywall, patches, stains and strong colours all need primer, or they show through.
  • Taping and cutting in. Sharp lines along ceilings, trim and corners are what the eye notices first.

Choosing colour and finish

The finish matters as much as the colour.

  • Flat or matte. Hides imperfections well. Best for ceilings and low-traffic rooms.
  • Eggshell. A soft, slight sheen that wipes clean. The usual choice for living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Satin. More durable and washable. Good for hallways, kids' rooms, kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Semi-gloss. Tough and easy to clean. Used for trim, doors and baseboards.

Before you commit to a colour, paint a sample on the wall and look at it in daylight and in the evening. Colours shift with the light, and a shade that looks right on a paint chip can look very different across a whole wall.

How to prepare for your visit

  • Choose your colours and finishes. Have the paint names and codes ready, or the paint itself if you're buying it.
  • Take down what's on the walls. Pictures, mirrors, shelves and curtains.
  • Put away small and fragile items. We'll move and cover the furniture.
  • Point out problem areas. Show us stains, cracks or patches you're worried about.
  • Plan for the room. It will be out of use while we work and while the paint dries.
  • Arrange for pets and children to stay out of the work area.

Why homeowners call The Man on Call

The Man on Call is a locally owned home services company based in Newmarket, serving homeowners across the GTA. We treat every home the way we'd want ours treated.

For painting, that means careful prep, clean lines and a room handed back in better shape than we found it. We arrive when we say we will, tell you what the job will cost before we start, and protect your floors and furniture while we work.

Because we also repair drywall and handle carpentry, we can fix what's under the paint first. One team can patch the wall, replace the damaged baseboard and paint the room.

Room need a fresh coat?

Tell us which rooms you'd like painted, and we'll give you an estimate and a time that works for you. Call The Man on Call and we'll have it looking new.
