Furniture Assembly: How It Works, What We Build and How to Prepare

Alt text

New furniture looks simple in the store. Then the boxes arrive: dozens of panels, a bag of screws and bolts, and a booklet of diagrams with no words. What the box promised would take an hour takes the whole evening, and the finished piece still wobbles or has a drawer that won't close.

A furniture assembly service takes that job off your hands. This guide explains how the service works, what we build, how to prepare for your visit, and why a properly assembled piece lasts longer.

What furniture assembly is, and what it isn't

Furniture assembly is a hands-on service for flat-pack and ready-to-assemble furniture. We come to your home with our own tools, unpack each box, build the furniture in the room where it will stay, and take the packaging away. You don't need to read a single instruction.

It is not a delivery service. We assemble furniture you've already bought and had delivered to your home. We don't pick up orders from the store or move furniture between addresses.

How the service works

  1. You call us. Tell us what you bought, how many pieces there are and the brand or model if you have it.
  2. We give you an estimate. You'll know roughly how long the job will take and what it will cost before you book.
  3. We arrive on time. We bring every tool the job needs, so you don't have to find an Allen key.
  4. We unpack and check the parts. We lay everything out and confirm nothing is missing or damaged before we start.
  5. We build it in place. Each piece is assembled in the room where it will stay, so nothing has to be carried through a doorway afterwards.
  6. We secure and clean up. We anchor tall pieces to the wall, check that doors and drawers line up, and clear away the boxes.

What we build

Bedroom furniture. Beds, bunk beds, bed frames with storage, dressers, nightstands and wardrobes.

Office furniture. Desks, standing desks, office chairs, bookcases and filing cabinets.

Living room furniture. TV stands, media units, shelving units, cabinets and coffee tables.

Kids' furniture. Cribs, change tables, toddler beds and toy storage.

Storage and closet systems. Closet organizers, pantry units and garage shelving.

Outdoor furniture. Patio sets, loungers and storage boxes.

We assemble furniture from every brand, including IKEA, Wayfair, Structube, Amazon and Costco. If it comes in a box with instructions, we can build it.

Why proper assembly matters

Flat-pack furniture is only as strong as the way it's put together. A few common mistakes shorten its life:

  • Overtightened fasteners. They crack particle board and strip the holes, so joints loosen over time.
  • Panels installed backwards. The unfinished edge ends up facing out, and fixing it means taking the piece apart.
  • Skipped steps. Missing dowels or a back panel that isn't square leave a piece that leans and wobbles.
  • No wall anchor. Tall dressers and bookcases can tip, which is a real danger in homes with children.

We follow the manufacturer's instructions step by step, square each piece before fastening it, and anchor anything tall to the wall.

How to prepare for your visit

  • Keep everything in the boxes. Opened boxes are where small parts go missing.
  • Put the boxes in the right room. If they're too heavy, leave them where they are and we'll move them.
  • Clear some floor space. We need room to lay out the panels, especially for beds and wardrobes.
  • Decide where each piece goes. Large furniture is hard to move once it's built.
  • Tell us about anchoring. Let us know if you rent or have restrictions on drilling into walls.
  • List every piece. Having several items built in one visit is the best use of your time.

What if parts are missing or damaged?

It happens more often than you'd expect. We check the parts against the list before we begin. If something is missing or broken, we'll show you what it is so you can request a replacement from the retailer. Where possible, we build as much as we safely can and return to finish once the part arrives.

Why homeowners call The Man on Call

The Man on Call is a locally owned home services company based in Newmarket, serving homeowners across the GTA. We started the business because home projects shouldn't take over your evenings and weekends.

For furniture assembly, that means we arrive when we say we will, tell you what the job will cost before we start, and build every piece as if it were going in our own home. We protect your floors while we work and take the cardboard with us.

Because we also handle mounting, repairs and installations, one visit can cover more than the furniture. We can mount the TV above the new media unit, hang the mirror over the dresser or put up the shelves beside the desk.

Furniture still in the box?

Tell us what you bought, and we'll give you an estimate and a time that works for you. Call The Man on Call and we'll have it built and ready to use.
