Carpentry and Woodwork: What We Build, How It Works and What to Expect

Alt text

Trim, shelving and woodwork are the details that make a room look finished. They are also the first place poor workmanship shows. A gap at a corner, a baseboard that doesn't sit flat or a railing that wobbles catches your eye every time you walk past.

Good carpentry comes down to careful measuring and clean cuts. This guide explains what we build and repair, how the service works, what affects the result and how to prepare.

What our carpentry service is, and what it isn't

We handle finish carpentry and wood repairs inside your home. That means the visible woodwork: trim, mouldings, shelving, storage, stairs and railings, and repairs to wood that is damaged or worn.

We don't take on structural framing, decks or full kitchen cabinet builds. Those are larger projects that need a dedicated crew and, in some cases, permits.

How the service works

  1. You call us. Tell us what you'd like built, installed or repaired. Photos and rough measurements help.
  2. We give you an estimate. You'll know roughly how long the job will take and what it will cost before you book.
  3. We measure on site. Walls and floors are rarely perfectly straight, so every piece is measured where it will go.
  4. We cut and fit. Each piece is cut to fit its spot, with tight joints at the corners.
  5. We fasten and finish. Nail holes are filled, seams are caulked and the work is left ready for paint.
  6. We clean up. Sawdust and offcuts are cleared away before we leave.

What we build and install

Baseboards and casing. New trim around floors, doors and windows, or replacement of damaged sections.

Crown moulding. Installed with clean inside and outside corners.

Wainscoting and wall panelling. Chair rails, board and batten, and panel details.

Custom shelving. Built to fit alcoves, closets, pantries and garages.

Closet storage. Shelves, rods and organizers built around how you use the space.

What we repair

Stairs and railings. Loose railings, wobbly posts, squeaky treads and broken spindles.

Cabinets. Sagging doors, misaligned drawers, loose hinges and new hardware.

Door frames and trim. Split, chewed or water-damaged sections repaired or replaced.

Damaged wood. Rot, dents and breaks repaired where the result will last, and replaced where it won't.

What makes carpentry look good

  • Tight joints. Corners that meet cleanly, with no gaps to fill with caulk.
  • Coped inside corners. One piece is shaped to fit over the other, so the joint stays closed as the house moves.
  • Scribing. Trim is shaped to follow an uneven wall or floor instead of leaving a gap.
  • Consistent reveals. Even spacing around door and window casings.
  • Clean finishing. Filled nail holes and neat caulk lines that vanish under paint.

Choosing materials

  • MDF. Smooth, stable and affordable. A good choice for painted trim in dry rooms.
  • Pine and poplar. Solid wood that takes paint well and stands up better to knocks.
  • Oak and maple. Hardwoods for stained work, stairs and railings.
  • PVC and moisture-resistant trim. For bathrooms and other damp areas where wood and MDF swell.

If you're matching existing trim, a photo and the height and thickness of the current pieces help us find the closest profile.

How to prepare for your visit

  • Know what you want. Photos of styles you like make it easy to agree on the result.
  • Decide on paint or stain. It affects which material we use.
  • Clear the work area. Move furniture away from the walls where trim or shelving is going.
  • Tell us what the shelves will hold. Books and tools need stronger support than towels.
  • Plan for some noise and dust. We cut outside or in the garage when we can.
  • List every job. Several small repairs in one visit is the best use of your time.

Why homeowners call The Man on Call

The Man on Call is a locally owned home services company based in Newmarket, serving homeowners across the GTA. We care about the details, because the details are what you live with.

For carpentry, that means measuring carefully, cutting cleanly and not leaving until the joints are tight. We arrive when we say we will, tell you what the job will cost before we start, and clean up the sawdust.

Because we also repair drywall and paint, one team can take the job to a finished result: install the trim, fill and caulk it, and paint it to match the room.

Need trim or shelving installed?

Tell us what you have in mind, and we'll give you an estimate and a time that works for you. Call The Man on Call and we'll build it to last.
